Kupukupu is a long and narrow sword fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) indigenous to Hawaiï and is one of the first plants to appear on lava fields. Kupu means to sprout, growth; offspring; upstart, as one rising suddenly and conspicuously to high position; to germinate, increase; to occur.
